On rare occasions, even the best of preparation cannot stop an oral accident. But did you know that extensive preparation can drastically reduce your recovery time, and in severe cases, save your smile? Here are two common oral emergencies and what to do to recover your smile:

Object Stuck in Mouth: If an inedible or difficult object gets stuck between your teeth, stay calm. Under no circumstances should you attempt to rip it out with your fingers. If there is bleeding, you can use gauze to help cover the wound until it clots. The best tool for removal is instead an interdental tool like as dental floss or a water flosser.

Lost Filling or Dental Crown: If a filling or a dental crown becomes dislodged, you will first want to cover the open wound. Typically, a piece of chewing gum or dental cement can cover the filling. If you’ve lost a dental crown, simply cover the area with a cotton swab. If possible, apply clove oil to a cotton ball and hold it to the area for a prolonged period of time.
