Every dental checkup performed at James A. Johnson, DDS is designed to allow our team to address every aspect of maintaining a healthy mouth. It starts with a thorough dental cleaning to remove plaque buildup and hardened tartar from all the surfaces of your teeth. Your dentist will then examine your mouth for any signs of tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancer.

Should Dr. James Johnson detect signs of weakened tooth enamel, he might recommend adding a fluoride treatment at the end of the appointment.

Fluoride exposure helps restore the mineral density of tooth enamel. If you’ve had issues with sensitivity and tooth decay, it might be a sign of insufficient fluoride exposure.

A concentrated fluoride gel will be poured into a special tray that will be inserted in your mouth along with a small suction wand. This will catch any extra saliva or loose fluoride gel. They will be held in your mouth for a few minutes. Ideally, you want to avoid eating or drinking for up to an hour after the treatment.

Your dentist might also advise cutting back on acidic foods and beverages or making concerted improvements in your daily oral hygiene routine. Brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste will also help you maintain strong teeth.
